Dr Barney Mitton
Clinical microbiologist at the Ampath National Reference Laboratory in Centurion. Provides diagnostic support and practical guidance to clinicians managing infectious diseases. Special interests include infections in critically ill patients and infections of bone and joints, where cases are often complex, frequently urgent, and seldom boring.
Qualifications include undergraduate and postgraduate medical degrees from the University of Pretoria, an MBA from the University of Cape Town, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of the Witwatersrand. Fellow of the College of Pathologists of South Africa.
Also appointed as an Extraordinary Lecturer in Medical Microbiology at the University of Pretoria, a title more flattering than it is literal. Passionate about practical and collaborative infectious disease care. Believes that the best laboratory support is not only accurate but also accessible, responsive, and shaped by the realities of clinical practice.
