Genetics

Genetics uses innovative techniques to investigate how changes in DNA result in inherited diseases and cancer.

Ampath Genetics

Our Genetics Department is based at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Centurion, Gauteng, and offers both clinical and non-clinical genetic services. The Ampath Clinical Genetics Laboratory is ISO 15189 and SANAS accredited, participates in several external quality assessments and is an HPCSA-approved training facility for medical scientists. Our team consists of highly skilled and experienced medical scientists, medical technologists, clinical geneticists, pathologists, and genetic counsellors.

Our Services

Genetic Testing and Clinical Services Offered

Ampath Genetics offers a comprehensive range of laboratory and clinical genetics services. By utilising advanced technologies such as PCR, Sanger sequencing, next-generation sequencing, chromosomal microarrays, and FISH we provide accurate and reliable results which support clinical decision-making and patient care. We offer testing related to congenital abnormalities/ developmental disorders, inherited cancer syndromes, reproductive genetics, paternity testing, pharmacogenomics, and cancer (tumour) testing. We also offer a consultative clinical and counselling service.

Cancer (Tumour) Genetics

We investigate for inherited as well as acquired genetic changes that drive tumour development, progression, and response to therapy.

Rare/Inherited Diseases

Rare and inherited disease genetics focuses on identifying genetic changes responsible for uncommon or familial conditions, enabling accurate diagnosis, carrier screening, and personalised management.

Reproductive Genetics

Reproductive genetics explores the role of genetic factors in fertility, pregnancy, and inherited conditions, offering screening and diagnostic testing to support informed reproductive decision-making.

Genetic Counselling

Our genetic counsellors help individuals and families understand the medical, psychological, and familial implications of genetic conditions, including testing options, results, and risk management.

Transplant Genetics

HLA typing identifies specific genes in the immune system called human leukocyte antigens (HLA). It is mainly used to match organ and bone marrow donors with recipients, determine disease associations, and identify pharmacogenetic markers affecting drug metabolism.

Pharmacogenomics

PGx helps to identify genetic changes that can be used to improve treatment and reduce side-effects.

Paternity/DNA Testing

Genetically determines whether a specific man is the biological father of a child, using a simple and accurate comparison of their DNA.

Forensic Genetics

DNA analysis is used to identify individuals and establish biological relationships in criminal investigations, missing persons cases, and legal matters.

Medical Scientist Internship

We offer a 2-year, HPCSA-accredited, medical scientist internship programme.

Our Expertise

Ampath Genetics is a multidisciplinary team of scientists, pathologists, genetic counsellors, and clinical experts offering extensive knowledge across a range of specialties. Our key areas of expertise include Cancer (Tumour) Genetics, Rare Disease diagnostics, Reproductive Genetics, and Pharmacogenomics. We also provide specialised services in Forensic Genetics, Transplant Genetics, and DNA testing. Beyond diagnostics, our Genetics division offers Genetic Counselling to help patients and their families understand complex results and plan the best course of action. Our services are enhanced by a patient-centred approach, ongoing education, and seamless integration with other departments such as Immunology and Andrology.

Key Tests / Services

We provide a comprehensive suite of genetic testing services designed to meet a wide variety of clinical needs. Our Cancer (Tumour) Genetics team focuses on solid tumours, haematological neoplasms, and inherited cancer predisposition, offering targeted and broad testing strategies. For Rare Diseases, we provide advanced diagnostics, including chromosomal disorder analysis, single-gene disorder testing, and specialised panels. Reproductive Genetics services cover non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), prenatal diagnostics, fertility investigations, and male reproductive health assessments, often in collaboration with our Andrology department. Our Pharmacogenomics services help personalize medication choices based on individual genetic profiles. Additionally, we offer Transplant Genetics, Genetic Counselling, and Paternity/DNA testing through our Forensic Genetics section. A full test list and easy access to requisition forms ensure clinicians can quickly find and request the appropriate diagnostics.

Our Technology

Our laboratories are equipped with cutting-edge genetic testing technologies, including next-generation sequencing (NGS), chromosomal microarray analysis, and PCR-based diagnostics. Interactive tools, such as body system navigation for cancer testing and dynamic test selection by indication, allow for precise and efficient test ordering. Our digital platform also provides access to educational resources and links to related specialties like Immunology for Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs), ensuring an integrated diagnostic experience. These technological advances support both routine and complex casework, delivering accurate results with optimal turnaround times.
