Dr Carolyn Fedler

Chemical Pathology

Dr Carolyn Fedler developed a love for biochemistry while doing her BSc (Hons) degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, and working as a medical research scientist before going back to study medicine. She qualified in 1994 and completed her internship at Helen Joseph Hospital, and spent a year locuming locally and in the UK. She started her chemical pathology registrar training in 1997 with the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). She graduated in 2000 after completing her FCPath (ChemPath), and completed her MMed in Chemical Pathology in 2002.

She worked as a consultant, training registrars, presenting at conferences and publishing educational and research papers, in addition to lecturing and developing the GEMP Chemical Pathology curriculum for undergraduate medical students. She joined Ampath in 2007. She was the editor of the educational PathChats to keep clients updated, and initiated the change from regional to national AmpathChats until 2020, and is based in the central Johannesburg area. Her interests are somewhat out-of-the-box and varied, including epi-/genetics/molecular biology, obesity, and palliative medicine.
