Dr Clinton van der Westhuizen

Dr Clinton van der Westhuizen isa clinical microbiologist at Ampath Laboratories, serving the Western and Eastern Cape regions.

After completing his undergraduate studies in 2010, he worked primarily in internal medicine across Cape Town and East London. However, his intrigue with the pathogens that cause infectious diseases led him to trade his stethoscope for a microscope. He specialised in microbiology at Stellenbosch University and, following a brief tenure at the NHLS, joined Ampath in 2023.

Clinton is committed to integrate laboratory diagnostics with clinical practice to ensure that test results are conveyed with relevance and utility. He actively fosters collaboration by participating regularly in clinical, ICU, infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship rounds. He has particular interest in antimicrobial pharmacodynamics, molecular diagnostics and the innovative application of biotechnology to advance medical diagnostics and therapeutic strategies.
