Evaluating Male Fertility
When to Consider Male Fertility Testing
If a couple is unable to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse, a spermiogram (semen analysis) is recommended.
Several male factors may contribute to infertility.
What is a Spermiogram (Semen Analysis)?
A spermiogram is a set of tests used to evaluate male fertility. It provides insights that can influence the ability to conceive.
The analysis includes:
- Volume of the specimen
- Sperm count
- Sperm motility (movement over time, up to 8 hours)
- Sperm morphology (shape)
- Additional tests like sperm antibody testing
The results help guide future planning or treatment.
Instructions for Semen Collection
Before the Test
- Abstain from sexual activity for 3 days (not more than 7 days).
- Avoid delays and temperature changes – produce the sample at the lab if possible.
- Pass urine, then wash and dry hands thoroughly.
- Use a sterile container provided by the lab (available at any Ampath facility).
During the Test
- Produce the sample via masturbation and collect entirely in the container.
- Do not use regular condoms or lubricants – they contain spermicides.
-Special condoms (spermicide-free) are available from the lab.
After the Test
- The sample is monitored for up to 8 hours.
- A blood sample will be taken to test for sperm antibodies.
- Results are sent to your doctor within one week.
Any deviation from these instructions may affect the accuracy of the results.
All information is treated confidentially.
