Ampath Genetics – International Genetic Testing Fact Sheet

Ampath Genetics offers a referral and clinician support service for constitutional genetic testing not available in South Africa.
Patients also have access to pre- and post-test genetic counselling.

While local genetic testing options are growing, many rare disorders still require international testing. Based on clinical features and family history, tests like:

• Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) panels
• Whole Exome Sequencing (WES)

1. Invitae Laboratories (USA) 🇺🇸
2. Centogene Laboratories (Germany) 🇩🇪
3. Occasionally, other labs are used if specific tests are unavailable at the above.

Note: Most medical aids do not cover international testing costs.

Referral Process Highlights

• Clinical phenotypic info from the referring doctor is essential
• Informed consent is required
• Testing costs are paid by the patient directly to the lab
• Clinical and genetic counselling support is available via Ampath Genetics

Referral & Testing Process Summary

1. ‍Referring clinician contacts Ampath Genetics
2. Sample collected at any Ampath Care Centre
3. Patient signs specific consent form
4. Patient pays referral lab directly
5. Turnaround: 3–6 weeks
6. Results sent to clinician with support from Ampath Genetics
7. Genetic counselling offered separately upon referral
