Respiratory Virus Multiplex PCR and SARS-CoV-2 PCR: All age groups

Comments:

  • The most frequently detected viruses across all age groups during February were:
    • Rhino/enterovirus (38.8%)
    • Rhinovirus (19.4%)
    • Enterovirus (9.8%)
    • SARS-CoV-2 (9.7%)

Epidemiological Week 1–9:

  • SARS-CoV-2: Peaked in week 2 with a 23.9% positivity rate, declining to 6.2% in week 9.
  • Influenza A and B: Influenza B remained stable at 0.2% in week 9. Influenza A increased from 2.8% in week 5 to 5.2% in week 9.
  • RSV: Increased from 1.1% in week 5 to 3.3% in week 9.

Atypical Bacterial Pathogens

Pathogens Covered: Bordetella pertussis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila

Comments:

  • B. pertussis, M. pneumoniae, and C. pneumoniae continue to circulate at low levels.
  • Six cases of Legionella pneumophila pneumonia were detected by PCR testing during February.
  • In paediatric patients, most B. pertussis cases were in the 6–12 month age group (40%). 20% of cases were in patients >18 years.
  • Most C. pneumoniae cases were in the 1–12 year age group.
  • Most M. pneumoniae cases were in adults aged 19–64 years.

    • Rhino/enterovirus (49.2%)
    • Rhinovirus (27%)
    • SARS-CoV-2 (10.6%)
  • 1–5 years of age:
    • Rhino/enterovirus (62.8%)
    • Rhinovirus (36.5%)
    • Enterovirus (18.5%)
    • Parainfluenza virus (16.7%)
  • 6–12 years of age:
    • Rhino/enterovirus (54%)
    • Rhinovirus (29.8%)
    • Enterovirus (19.2%)
